The Ox Cart is Rolling

The Ox Cart is Rolling!
July 2007

Could you live in a soddy for a North Dakota winter?  The coldness would be one thing, but how about listening to the kids all day?  Today we would put them in front of the television or hand them a book.  But books were not readily available and had to read and reread many times, if you did have some.  Then when they do go out in the snow to play, you still have to dry their clothing when they come in all wet.  The whole living area would be full of clothes line!  And the runny noses . . . Uffda!

Sophie’s Dilemma is now available for you to purchase at Drayton Drug.  That book and all her books will also be available from award-winning author Lauraine Snelling throughout the weekend.  A writing workshop is scheduled for Friday at the H. G. Johnson Hall.  You could still join in this event.  Even if you don’t intend to “write a book”, the class could give you insight on her books and your surroundings.  It could make you think about listening to the birds or that cricket chirping from the backyard or seeing a ladybug walking across a leaf.  Then, how do you write down that experience?

The parade in Drayton is always a great event to watch and participate in for everyone.  Then be sure to join us for Homemade pie and Homemade ice cream in the afternoon at H. G. Johnson Memorial Hall at 2:00.  It was a treat for our early settlers to have ice cream, but they had to wait until there was ice on the river to make that delicious dessert!

“Supper At The Soddy” will be a new event this year at Riverfest.  OCTHS members have been busy planning and making costumes for the workers.  The homemade meal and setting is for you to experience how it was.  When you consider how our foremothers and forefathers lived, it is a wonder that things are like it is today.  This is an experience that you won’t want to miss on Saturday, July 21 at the museum grounds.  Lauraine and Wayne Snelling will be joining us for this meal.

We have many projects on our plate, and we need Drayton’s help to do all this.        Our web site is www.oxcarttrails.net.  Should you have questions regarding any of these activities call 701-454-6103 or email president@oxcarttrails.net.  Help us keep the Ox Cart Rolling.
