The Ox Cart is Rolling

The Ox Cart is Rolling!
August 2003 Issue

All the hard work by the members of Ox Cart Trails Historical Society paid off as the museum had over 400 visitors during Riverfest.

Memorial funds given in memory of Vandell Anderson were used to purchase the
material to put on the deck in front of the museum. Donations in memory of Simone Grundstrom were from Dorothy Hoselton, Patricia Anderson, Margaret Torrey, Vernon and Alma Sundin, Don Holler, Bernadine Albrecht, Ray and Roberta Van Camp, Jane Anderson, Susan and Dwight Johnson, Sandra Jaeger, Ron and Marlys Boll. Thank you!

A baseball display has been donated by Myron Albrecht and includes scrapbooks, photos and other memorabilia. This is a great addition to the other displays in the museum.

The pageant was wonderful and attended by over 700 people with many attending more than one performance. Comments were that a lot of history was packed into less than two hours of viewing. A video was made of this project and many pictures were taken. More on that later. Even visitors not from our area enjoyed this historical pageant to celebrate Drayton's 125th Anniversary. Our special thanks go to Member Saralee Hoselton for writing and directing this pageant.

The heritage quilt was won by Carol McConnell from Colorado. There have been many requests for another quilt and a decision will be made at a later date. Thanks to all that purchased these raffle tickets and supported this project.

Our commemorative ornaments have been selling very well and are still available at Valley News and Views, Drayton Bank, and Agri Valley C Store where many travelers are picking up this souvenir from Drayton. You may view these on our web site www.oxcarttrails.net.

Lauraine Snelling's seminar had 32 writers in attendance. The topic for this seminar was Hands on Fiction and, as a result of her last seminar from two years ago, Gene and Lu Lusty have published a book about their own heritage. A copy of this book has been donated to the museum. Lauraine's book signing and talk were well
attended with many books sold. Ms Snelling signed extra copies of her books and these are now available at Valley News and Views. These include the 9 books of the Red River Series, Gift, Healing Quilt, Dakota and her latest, Ruby. If you would like copies of any of her other many books, let us know. Stop in the pick up your copy today.

Our float in the parade was a result of borrowing an oxcart. We hope to have one of these in Drayton. You may view this float, Lauraine and Wayne Snelling on the manure spreader, and the many other entries of the parade on the Drayton website.

Our latest projects are to landscape, put new siding on the museum, get the electricity up and running, and install a heating source, ramp, and security system in the building. If you would like to help out with any of these projects, feel free to call on one of the members to offer your assistance. We will be scheduling work nights soon to complete these and other projects.

All members are invited and urged to attend all special meetings. We will have work nights at the museum the first and third Wednesdays of the month starting September 3, 6:30. Besides the outside work we must
catalog the items that are already in place. If these evenings are not workable for you, arrangements can be made for another time. Let us know.
